THe real inventor of the radio
After Tesla had accredited his fame from the AC motor, he turned his interests to other fields. He shortly after invented a Tesla Coil, that was capable of producing currents so large that it could be seen with human eyes. “With his newly created Tesla coils, the inventor soon discovered that he could transmit and receive powerful radio signals when they were tuned to resonate at the same frequency”(Uth and Cheney)”. By the year 1895, Tesla managed to even transmit a signal from his lab to West Point, New York over 50 miles away.
That year a great fire burned down Tesla’s lab destroying most of his research and inventions. “The timing could not have been worse. In England, a young Italian experimenter named Guglielmo Marconi had been hard at work building a device for wireless telegraphy. The young Marconi had taken out the first wireless telegraphy patent in England in 1896”(Uth and Cheney). However, his device was very weak. It was said that is could originally only send a signal across a small pond. Marconi then improved on his experiment and made it a large scale thing, but only by using a Tesla oscillator could he do so. Tesla was granted his patent for the radio in America in 1900, and in the same year the US patent office turned down Marconi because the invention was credited to Tesla.
Around this time, Tesla was running low on funding for his research. Unfortunately, Thomas Edison and Andrew Carnegie both invested heavily in Marconi ”In 1900, the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company, Ltd. began thriving in the stock markets… and in 1904, the U.S. Patent Office suddenly and surprisingly reversed its previous decisions and gave Marconi a patent for the invention of radio”(Uth and Cheney). It was not until after Tesla’s death that the US returned the patent of the radio back to him, but the damage to history had already been done. To this day, Marconi still is considered the inventor of the radio, but it was really Tesla who had made the breakthrough.
